MSC Response To Wilfried Huismann’s 'Bait In The Freezer – The Dark Side Of The MSC Label'

London – Yesterday (23 April) a documentary was broadcast on German public TV (ADR), making a series of unfounded criticisms of the MSC. While we welcome discussion regarding our certification program and understand the desire to investigate existing models for sustainable fishing, we are disappointed that the MSC’s role, agenda and program were so misrepresented.

The documentary asks if the MSC ecolabel is a marketing tool used to generate goodwill and profit for the seafood industry. It also discusses specific issues including, but not limited to: shark finning, dolphin mortality, suggestions of the lowering of certification standards for profit, observer bribery and intimidation, and preferential treatment for big boats over small, artisanal boats. There are also claims of malpractice surrounding fisheries that are not MSC certified.
