Lobster Prices Were Foreseeable, Says Industry Group

This year's poor fall lobster prices are a wake-up call for the industry that, for the most part, people should have seen coming, says the head of a group that works to improve the fishery's markets and prices.

The industry knew markets are poor, with struggling economies in Europe and the U.S., said Geoff Irvine, executive director of the Halifax-based Lobster Council of Canada.

Then the early, warm weather put a glut of softer-shelled lobster from Maine on the market earlier than usual and the price collapsed.

"We're ignoring the essential market realities. We are landing more lobster than ever — in Maine and Canada. We are landing more lobster in every season than ever. At the same time, our core markets are in very bad shape. We're ignoring that," said Irvine.
