Loblaw Nears Sustainability Goal

With the help of a Nova Scotia company, Loblaw Cos. Ltd. is nearing its goal of getting all of its seafood from suppliers using sustainable practises.

Three years ago, the Canadian grocery giant committed to sourcing the seafood it sells, including the seafood it sells at Atlantic Superstore, from sustainable sources and to having it certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, a leading eco-label for seafood suppliers, by the end of 2013. Since then the country’s largest buyer and seller of seafood has established deeper relationships with companies, such as Clearwater Seafoods Inc. of Bedford, in its quest to achieve their goal.

“We’re working hard toward that goal and one of the main areas when it comes to wild seafood is getting our suppliers engaged and becoming MSC certified,” Melanie Agopian, senior director of planning, meat and seafood at Loblaw, said Wednesday.

“So we relish relationships like we do have with Clearwater.”
