Preliminary results from a state initiative to gather input from commercial fishermen painted a picture of a struggling but resilient industry searching for a solution.
Surveys through Louisiana’s Seafood Future — a partnership between the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Louisiana Sea Grant and the state Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority — reached 917 people working in the crab, shrimp, oyster, fin fish, dock-working and processing industries.
The outreach, which spanned about a year, occurred via mail, online and regional and local meetings. The initiative, created in 2018, is meant to help the state’s billion dollar seafood industry adapt to coastal change.
