More than 30 boats took to the water at first light on the opening day of commercial scalloping season Tuesday, spreading across the early-morning surface of Nantucket and Madaket harbors. Early reports from scallopers indicate the shellfish are scarce and it’s taking until late morning or later to fulfill their daily bushel limits.
“It’s not that great. You’ve just got to keep plugging along,” said Carl Sjolund, who got his first scallop license in 1956, and who was fishing off Hulbert Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
This week, fishermen were getting $16 per pound for their catch, and the shellfish were being sold for $24 per pound at Sayle’s Seafood, $24.95 per pound at Glidden’s Island Seafood and $21 at Souza’s Seafood.
