ORONO, Maine — The federal government is providing more than $2 million to several institutions on the East Coast for fishery projects designed to accomplish goals such as expanding the green crab harvest and reducing mortality on the lobster supply chain.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is awarding the $2.25 million in grants to eight projects via the Saltonstall-Kennedy program. One of the grants is slated for the University of Maine, which wants to ensure more lobsters survive to their destinations.
Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve has also received a grant to try to grow the fishery for green crabs, which are invasive crustaceans that threaten more lucrative species such as clams. Another grant would go to University of New Hampshire, which is working on a project to make improvements in the fishery for whelks.
