SAN FRANCISCO — “Christmas Crab” is on the way to a market or restaurant menu near you, as crab fishers spent Sunday hauling up traps full of the Dungeness variety from the ocean floor, and some began heading back to docks along much of the state’s coast with their catch.
“People look forward to this every year, fresh crab,” said Gregg Tanji, captain of The Active II, a commercial fishing boat that was among the first to bring Dungeness back to Pier 45 from the coastal waters Sunday afternoon.
Wholesalers and their crews at the pier sprang into action as the first loads came in, using hydraulic lifts to help dump buckets full of live crabs into massive plastic totes, while the crustaceans clicked and snapped their claws.
