Portland, ME – The city of Boston is preparing for the 30th International Boston Seafood Show/Seafood Processing America event to be held in less than two weeks, March 20-22 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. This annual international event will once again boost the city’s economic activity with record attendance expected this year.
The International Boston Seafood Show/Seafood Processing America is considered the industry’s most anticipated convention for a number of reasons, according to Pat Moscaritolo, president and CEO of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This event brings in visitors from around the globe who get to experience all our city has to offer,” he said. “The delegates are dining at Boston and Cambridge's great restaurants and driving more than $25-million in spending that week into our visitor economy. The International Boston Seafood Show has become a cherished tradition for our visitor industry along with Opening Day at Fenway Park, the Boston Marathon, and the Boston POPS Fourth of July concert."
Not only does the event benefit Boston-area restaurants, taxi companies and shopping establishments, but it has a large financial impact on city hotels as well, comments Brian Schend, director of client services for onPeak, the official International Boston Seafood Show travel partner. “The event this year will bring in almost 16,000 room nights into the city counting 24 hotels in the city and surrounding areas,” said Schend. “That’s just about 3.7 million dollars of hotel revenue for the city and that doesn’t include hotels outside of our hotel block, restaurants, taxis and shopping by visitors and exhibitors who attend the show.”
This year’s event is expected to be the largest show in years with over 17,000 people attending from more than 130 countries. Mary Larkin, vice president of seafood expositions for Diversified Business Communications, the producer of the event, is optimistic for a very successful show this year. “Each year we seek to attract more exhibitors and attendees by offering an event with original content, including new educational conferences, business and networking opportunities,” Larkin said. “The 2011 event is already reflecting an improving economy with more exhibits and the true global focus of the industry with more products on offer.”
Since 1982, The International Boston Seafood Show has attracted thousands of seafood professionals, making it the largest annual seafood show in the United States. Attendees include buyers from leading restaurants, hotels, resorts, institutions, seafood markets and supermarkets, as well as distributors/wholesalers, processors, importers, exporters, brokers and traders. The show features approximately 900 exhibitors in more than 1,700 booths representing all facets of the seafood industry including fresh, frozen, live, value-added, branded and private label, as well as processing equipment and services ranging from machinery to refrigeration.
