Bill Aims To Boost Maryland Seafood Industry

WASHINGTON — A spending bill poised to win congressional approval this week includes provisions designed to support seafood harvests on Maryland’s Eastern Shore during peak seasons.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., announced on Wednesday that reforms to the H-2B visa program, used by the state’s seafood industry for seasonal labor, are included in the must-pass $1.1 trillion spending bill.  The provisions pushed by Mikulski — and fought by organized labor — also include a measure prohibiting the Labor Department from implementing a rule to protect workers’ pay.

The House is currently considering the legislation and the Senate will take it up later this week.
