The Global Aquaculture Alliance, the leading standards-setting organization for aquaculture seafood, is pleased to announce the Best Aquaculture Practices certification of Northern Harvest Sea Farms.
Northern Harvest's Bar Island site is eastern Canada's first BAP-certified salmon farm. The company is headquartered in St. George, New Brunswick, and maintains farm operations in both Newfoundland and New Brunswick.
"GAA congratulates Northern Harvest on bringing BAP certification to the Atlantic side of Canada," GAA President George Chamberlain said. "Its achievement reflects a clear dedication to responsible aquaculture that is spreading here and elsewhere."
"As a family-owned and community-based company for more than 25 years, we have been committed to producing environmentally healthy fish that are sustainably grown," Northern Harvest President Larry Ingalls said. "This milestone would not be possible without the active assistance of the local communities where we operate. Our certification only highlights the company's and employees' long-standing commitment to responsible aquaculture practices."
Northern Harvest also operates a HACCP-certified processing plant in St. George. Its new state-of-the-art salmon hatchery will be one of the largest in the world, Sales Manager Steve French said. Northern Harvest's company strategy is to deliver fresh, sustainably grown salmon with the smallest possible carbon footprint, as quickly and efficiently as possible.
BAP certification is based on the international Best Aquaculture Practices standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance. For salmon and other major farmed species, BAP requires effective management of animal health, feed inputs, water quality and food safety. In a process that includes site inspections and in-depth audits, social responsibility and traceability are additional requirements.
