Aquarium Of The Bay Promotes Sustainable Seafood

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4 — October is "National Seafood Month," and in keeping with its conservation-driven mission, Aquarium of the Bay will be leveraging the month-long event to alert Bay Area residents to the need to consume only sustainable seafood. Studies show that if current fishing practices are not improved and we do not change our eating habits, the world will be depleted of fish by 2048.

"Eating lower on the food chain, asking where your seafood is coming from and how it is caught, and voting with your fork in favor of the oceans are three simple ways that consumers can make an impact," says Carrie Chen, Education and Conservation Director for Aquarium of the Bay.

Aquarium of the Bay leads daily "Fishing for our Future" presentations, provides visitors with opportunities to connect with and learn respect for aquatic animals, and shares printed and online guides to sustainable seafood restaurants in the Bay Area. Guides are available onsite and online at http://www.aquariumofthebay.org/conservation.aspx?q=10002&c=1.

Aquarium of the Bay, California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoo launched the San Francisco Seafood Watch® Alliance to help raise consumer, restaurateur and seafood industry awareness of the importance of acquiring seafood from sustainable sources. The organizations provide regional support for Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program.

As part of the Alliance, Aquarium of the Bay has helped recruit more than 25 Bay Area partner restaurants since the Alliance was formed in 2009. Recent additions include Tataki South and the Moss Room, both in San Francisco. The aquarium leads training sessions to help chefs and restaurant staffs select sustainable seafood options.
