Aquaculture Brings Yellowtail Market To Maine

FRANKLIN, Maine  — Mainers are used to fresh caught lobster, shrimp and Haddock from the chilly Atlantic waters. In a few years, groceries will also be selling fresh yellowtail, a fish the naturally lives in tropical waters.

In 2012, Acadia Harvest Incorporated partnered the University of Maine's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research to develop its start-up business of growing yellowtail using land based aquaculture production. The company now has 16,000 young yellowtail fish that they are growing to market size of four and a half pounds.

Growing the fish in a controlled environment allows the company to control the temperature of the water, PH levels and even the food they eat to prevent high mercury content. Production Manager Dr. Kevin Neves said the process won't be a competitor for the fishing industry.
