When State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson left an out-of-state restaurant this summer, he was worried about a health problem that has seldom concerned him in the past — the health of Alabama's seafood industry.
The waitress had made a point of assuring the diners that they didn't have to worry — the seafood on the menu was not from the Gulf Coast.
Williamson said Alabama and other Gulf Coast states need to make a concerted effort to use their increased testing of seafood because of the oil spill to convince other states and the consumers in them that their seafood has never been safer.
"We have an opportunity to say, 'Our seafood is the most tested in the country and we know it's safe. What about yours?'"
