MILTON — Weis Markets has begun construction of a 100,000-square-foot addition to its distribution center outside Milton to expand its capability to store and distribute meat, deli and dairy products.
The Sunbury-based food market chain obtained a $1 million state economic growth initiative grant to help finance the $13 million project, which is scheduled to be completed by February. The 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center employs 750 people.
The expansion will increase productivity and competitiveness, said Jonathan Weis, board chairman and CEO. It will also increase energy efficiency, allow consolidation of deliveries, and require the use of less refrigerant, he said.
