Wegmans is not looking to open a supermarket in the Albany, New York, area, despite speculation in a Syracuse newspaper about the company’s plans.
“We are not pursuing sites in Albany or the Capital District,” said Jo Natale, a spokeswoman for the western New York supermarket chain.
Natale was responding to a column in the Syracuse Post-Standard theorizing Albany would be a logical next step for Wegmans trucks driving from its headquarters in Rochester to a new store planned for Northborough, Massachusetts.
If Wegmans were to enter the Albany market, it would compete head-on with the dominant homegrown chain here, Price Chopper, owned by the Golub Corp. in Schenectady.
