No. 1 and No. 2 may sound like cushy places to be. But Wal-Mart and Kroger aren’t celebrating any victories.
As new grocers have brought their new concepts to the market in droves, Wal-Mart and Kroger are spending big bucks, blocking and tackling and using a flanking defense.
Both chains just got whipped in Houston by San Antonio-based H-E-B, which moved ahead of Wal-Mart and Kroger to lead the nation’s fourth-largest city. They don’t plan to lose North Texas, too.
