Upscale Supermarkets Evolve

Anybody old enough to remember the 1970s certainly recalls a time before upscale supermarkets – a time, hard as it seems now, that buying arugula or pecan oil or cranberry walnut stuffed brie would have been almost impossible.

Looking for a mangrove cucumber salad ready to go? Now, items such as that are available in deli cases across the land. Not that long ago, it would have seemed as fanciful as supposing one could take photographs with a phone.

Organic and gourmet foods are readily available in stores up and down U.S. 41, from Wynn’s Market near downtown Naples to a Whole Foods at the Mercato to Fresh Markets in Bonita Springs and south Fort Myers. A Trader’s Joes is scheduled to open shortly after the first of the year in Naples.

The supermarket landscape has changed as much as communications. Although the large chains such as Publix and Sweetbay dominate, upscale markets have carved a niche for themselves.
