Two Southwest Ohio-based food service companies are part of a new national effort to make available healthier meals at more affordable prices to more than 30 million U.S. school students.
AdvancePierre Foods in West Chester and Harrison-based JTM Food Group are among 13 companies and organizations agreeing to help fight childhood obesity by increasing the availability of healthier foods, in first of its kind agreements, brokered by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation.
"With students consuming up to half of their daily calories at school, healthy school meals are key to winning the fight against childhood obesity," said former President Clinton, who is slated to formally announce the new agreements with company CEOs today at a school in Miami, Fla.
Under the agreements, the manufacturers agree not to price healthy food options out of reach for school cafeterias by not pricing them higher than less healthy comparable products. They also pledge to increase sales of their complying healthy options to at least 50 percent of their entire school sales within five years.
