Tops Friendly Markets LLC will file for reorganization under Chapter 11 to eliminate debt and position the chain for long-term success, according to a release Wednesday.
Tops stores in New York, northern Pennsylvania and Vermont will remain open with no impact on day-to-day operations. The company employs over 14,000 employees across the nation, and operates 23 stores in the Rochester region. Tops, headquartered in Williamsville, New York, operates 169 full-service stores in total, with five additional stores operated by franchisees under the Tops Friendly Markets banner.
The company opened its first supermarket, a 25,000-square-foot-store on Portage Road in Niagara Falls in 1962.
