California is a grocery store lover’s dream — but only one city can count itself as the epicenter of the modern grocery movement. Los Angeles is pre-packaged paradise, a place where grocery stores are outfitted with thriving wine bars, where a fancypants health food chain can live in infamy thanks to its $20 smoothies.

And while LA may not be credited with first creating the supermarket — that honor goes to the Piggly Wiggly in Memphis — it’s in the City of Angels that the concept has thrived and diversified for the past hundred-plus years.
