The Schwan Food Co., best known for its pale-yellow delivery trucks, is taking steps to double the size of its food-service business that supplies cafeterias in schools, hospitals and, increasingly, restaurants. That division generates about $750 million in annual sales for Schwan’s already.
To reach that goal, Marshall-based Schwan is developing food-service products such as Mrs. Smiths breakfast pastries and Rising Sun Sushi. Its also beefing up its sales and marketing staff and spending while it looks for companies or technologies to acquire that can add innovative products.
Even with some help from acquisitions, the goal of doubling sales in a short span is an uphill battle, given the National Restaurant Associations prediction that the food-service industry will stay flat in 2010.
