Safeway is making its way to South Florida.
Renovations are underway to convert Albertsons at 950 E. Commercial Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale into a Safeway supermarket, the first in the area, according to a news release.
Albertsons LLC, which merged with Safeway in early 2015, is spending nearly $10 million to add a Starbucks coffee shop and expand specialty and organic food selections to the Lauderdale location and stores in Largo and Alamonte Springs.
The Fort Lauderdale store, which has a pharmacy and liquor store, will remain open during the redo, which began in late 2015.
