S & S Bakery Supports First Lady’s Let’s Move! Initiative

SAN DIEGO, CA– NPR has recently published an article about First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Initiative and other ways in which she has called attention to the importance of a healthy diet. In an interview with the First Lady, NPR and Michelle Obama discuss her family's eating habits, how Let's Move! can affect all of the kids in the country, and the "nanny state." S & S Bakery, a San Diego-based company that provides school lunch goods, believes in the mission of Let's Move! and supports the First Lady's efforts to improve the health of today's youth.

Michelle Obama makes it clear that she understands how hard it is to get kids to eat healthy food. She encountered a bit of resistance when her own children, aged 11 and 14, were first introduced to a healthier lifestyle.

"The hard part was trying to get the kids excited about a new diet. I mean, you know, one of the challenges that we face as moms is that today's foods are so high in sodium and sugar in an artificial way that kids' taste buds are really adjusted for that high level of sugar and salt. So when you go back to natural foods, things that aren't processed, it takes them time to adjust… But once we got them involved in the process of clearing out the cabinets, and we explained what was going on, and we spent time with them in farmer's markets, slowly but surely we started to introduce real food to their diets."

One of the most important ways in which adults can encourage healthier food choices is to make these choices available. S & S Bakery is helping do just that by improving the nutritional value of the goods that it supplies for school lunches.

School lunches have long held a reputation for being unhealthy; however, many organizations and individuals have fought to improve the dietary statistics associated with school lunches. In fact, many states have enacted stricter rules regarding the health of the food products that schools offer.

S & S Bakery is pulling its weight in this initiative by baking healthier bread and snacks. The company has increased its whole grain products from 30 percent whole grain to a minimum of 51 percent, and continues to meet the requirements for lower fat, sugar and total calories. In doing so it has had to change several operational and baking processes, but S & S Bakery believes every change is worth the improved health that its products provide.
