Florida-based supermarket chain Publix is still tight-lipped about the number of stores it plans for the Charlotte market, but it’s leaving the door open to future expansion.
“At Publix, we never say never,” spokeswoman Brenda Reid said in Charlotte this week. She said she couldn’t discuss whether Publix plans to open more stores around Charlotte than the initial two, which are being built in South Carolina.
Two supermarket analysts interviewed by the Observer agreed that Publix will most directly compete with Harris Teeter when it opens, though they disagreed about whether consumers will see big benefits in terms of lower prices.
