Publix Eyes Distribution Facility Near Orlando Airport

LAKELAND – Publix Super Markets Inc. is considering a massive distribution center project for Orlando.

Company officials are seeking a brownfield designation from the City of Orlando for a piece of property the grocer owns near the Beachline Expressway off Goldenrod Road. The property, located near the airport, could be used to house a distribution center measuring at least 1 million square feet. The project's cost is estimated at $188 million.

If Publix decides to build the facility, it would not replace the grocer's dry warehouse and distribution center on Sand Lake Road in Orlando, according to spokeswoman Shannon Patten.

"We are exploring the possibility of building a refrigerated warehouse and distribution center to support projected future growth," Patten told The Ledger. "Should we move forward with this project, the new distribution center would add an estimated 150-plus net new jobs over the first few years of operation."
