Pierre Foods Debuts Line Of Nutritious School-Menu Options

Pierre Foods Inc. said Friday it will introduce a new line of nutritious menu items for school cafeterias next month.

The more than 60 menu items in Pierre’s Smart Picks line will have one or more of these more-nutritious features: reduced sodium, a good source of protein, no trans fats, no hydrogenated oils, whole grains, fiber and reduced fat, according to a news release.

“As a company that serves 90 of the nation’s 100 largest school districts, we are constantly challenging ourselves to create new products for schools with reduced sodium and fat content, but that the students will still choose and enjoy,” said CEO Bill Toler in the release.

Pierre spent more than a year developing the proprietary recipes for the line, which includes all-beef patties, grilled chicken and whole-grain macaroni and cheese. The company said it will introduce the line at the School Nutrition Association’s annual national conference in July.
