Phillips Tuna is sourced in Samoa. The pristine waters of this South Pacific island nation produce tuna of superb quality, and the fishery targets a strong population that is not overfished. Samoa is a member of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, which oversees the conservation and management of regional tuna fisheries by restricting the number of tuna boats and working to reduce by-catch. Phillips will work closely with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), Samoan producers and the Samoan government to improve the fishery and ensure its long-term sustainability. According to Ed Rhodes, Phillips’ Vice President for Sustainability, “This is a small, managed fishery with good reporting in place and a very cooperative fisheries department: all positive signs for a sustainable future.”
Phillips Tuna is a new addition to the newly introduced Sustainable Fisheries FIP Program. Phillips provides funds to SFP in support of their global fisheries improvement work. The goal is to achieve sustainability in all seafood sources that includes wise management of the fishery and concern for the fishing communities that depend on these resources. For each pound of Phillips Tuna purchased, Phillips will donate 3 cents to SFP for these initiatives. “SFP applauds Phillips Foods initiative in taking the lead in seeking to improve this fishery. It is vitally important that companies such as Phillips engage proactively in improving fisheries they source from” stated Howard Johnson, SFP Director of Global Communications.
