New Leaf Market Raises Awareness, Funds In “Save The Apalach” Campaign

Tallahassee, FL – New Leaf Market, the largest natural foods cooperative in North Florida, recently announced that they are raising funds to help save the Apalachicola River and Bay. Partnering with Sweet Water Brewing Company, New Leaf Market will be raising funds for Apalachicola Riverkeeper from Memorial Day through July 4th, 2012.

The Apalachicola River and Bay is known for having the highest documented number of biological species of any river system in North America. Through the "Save the Apalach" campaign, individuals can show their support of the Apalachicola River and Bay by purchasing and decorating a $1.00, $5.00 or $10.00 paper fish. All proceeds will go directly to Apalachicola Riverkeeper.

Apalachicola Riverkeeper is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the Apalachicola River and Bay. Their staff of professionals and volunteers work to protect the river and bay against the current threats to this extraordinary natural resource. One of the greatest threats to the Apalachicola River and Bay is the decrease in fresh water currents that sustain the life of fish, frogs, turtles and other wildlife habitat. The Apalachicola River's flow of fresh water carries nutrients that sustain both the Apalachicola Bay and fish habitats for over 200 miles offshore. Water withdrawals in the upstream states of Georgia and Alabama are impacting these life-sustaining fresh water currents.

The "Save the Apalach" campaign held successful events throughout May, including several beer tastings and raffles. For the remainder of the campaign, supporters can purchase paper fish, glassware and t-shirts at New Leaf Market or make a donation on Apalachicola Riverkeeper's website.
