SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – In research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, researchers found that the food habits of children who had access to vending machines on school campuses were negatively impacted. But one company, Fresh Healthy Vending, is on a mission to take the advice of the researchers and help change the face of vending and food choices on school campuses.
“Vending machines on school campuses have become a hot topic,” explains Jolly Backer, the chief executive officer of Fresh Healthy Vending (www.freshvending.com), a company specializing in vending machines that are stocked with all healthy options. “But that is due to them usually being filled with unhealthy options. When you have a vending machine filled with healthy ones you nix the problems.”
According to the report, researchers found that many children skip eating lunch when there are vending machines, especially beverage machines, on campus. The problem, they report, is that the vending machines tend to be filled with less-healthy foods and drinks. The researchers also advised, in their report, that schools should consider reducing the availability of less-healthy choices in vending machines.
Fresh Healthy Vending is one of the companies helping schools to phase out less-healthy food choices. Their revolutionary vending machines are dual-climate controlled and completely stocked with healthy, nutritious food choices. No matter what food option a child selects, it will end up being a healthy one. The machines are all stocked with such options as yogurt, soymilk, fresh fruits and vegetables, all-natural cereal and granola bars, bottled water, and more.
Currently, over 600 of the new Fresh Healthy Vending machines have been installed around the country, with more being added each week. They are found at schools, shopping malls, health and wellness centers, and many business parks. The vending machines are an ideal option for schools, because they address the nutrition concerns of health professionals and parents alike.
“We take the choice out of letting kids pick between healthy and unhealthy food,” added Backer. “Our machines are stocked entirely with healthy foods, yet there is something for everyone. We are proving that schools can still have their vending machines and feel good about what they are offering in them.”
