Meijer's First Detroit Store Hopes To Succeed Where Other Retailers Have Failed

DETROIT, MI — Robert Ludlam remembers when grocery shopping could be a 40-mile round-trip drive.

“You could spend two hours picking up a few things,” said Ludlam, one of thousands of shoppers who came to check out Meijer Inc.'s first Detroit store on Thursday, July 25.

The new store at Eight Mile and Woodward Avenue is about 5 miles from his home near Belle Isle, he said.

The store opened at 6 a.m. Thursday to a line of more than 50 shoppers. Many of the customers who passed through the store in its first hours had a chance to chat with Hank Meijer and J.K. Symancyk, the co-chairman and president of the Michigan-based retailer.
