GRAND RAPIDS — Ruth Holland took one last swing Wednesday through the Meijer store where she has shopped for the past 30 years.
"We are just coming to say goodbye," said Holland, leaving with her son Matt, 21, after picking up a few items.
The new version of that store at Kalamazoo Avenue and 28th Street SE opens today after a 7 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by CEO Hank Meijer, other Meijer family members, and Mayor George Heartwell.
The site has historical importance to the family that owns the retail chain.
Founder Hendrik and son Fred Meijer are widely considered to have pioneered the concept of a super store that combines groceries with department store products.
