Industry Scrambles To Prepare For Wine In Tennessee Grocery Stores

A major change to Tennessee’s liquor laws that will allow grocery stores to sell wine in six weeks has retailers, distributors and the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Commission scrambling to prepare.

Kroger became one of the first grocers in the state this week to stock some of its shelves with wine — putting thousands of bottles on display — although customers still won’t be able to purchase it until July 1 when the new law takes effect.

The commission has approved more than 250 applications so far for grocery stores wanting to sell wine. But the ABC still has nearly 200 more to go, meaning the agency will need to average about seven a day between now and July 1. And that's if the commission receives no more requests.
