Iconic Jersey Diners Are Updating To Attract Younger Crowd

The Jubilee Park Diner, on Allwood Road in Clifton was taken over last spring by brothers George and Gus Logothetis after the city rejected an attempt by McDonald's to open a restaurant on the site. The brothers gutted the building to make way for a $1 million makeover and changed the name to the Allwood Diner.

When it opens this month, the diner that once stood in its place will be just a memory.

The iconic New Jersey diner, with its neon signs, stainless steel facade and multipage menu, is undergoing a transformation, with some diner owners updating décor and revamping comfort-food offerings in the hope of luring a younger clientele.

The traditional Jersey diner — a chrome-sided railroad-car-style structure with long, narrow dining rooms — has given way to more modern facades in stone or stucco, with multiple rooms. Even their long hours and greasy-spoon menus are being modified.
