The last remaining independent food wholesaler in the Capital Region has set up a way for local farmers to ship products direct to grocery stores or other new markets, the company said Monday.
Ginsberg's Food will be acting as a shipper of local farm products in upstate rather than a purchaser, which will reduce overheard and other costs by reducing the need for inventory and sales staff, said Ginsberg Vice President John Brusie.
"Why do that to the local guy who is bottling his own milk or making his own cheese?" said Brusie. "We just don't take ownership of the product in this case." Rather, the company rents out its trucks, drivers and food logistics staff to farmers and food marketers who want to ship their products.
