Shares in Tesco and Wm Morrison surged on Tuesday after the strongest growth in British food sales since 2008 helped to resuscitate the embattled supermarket groups.
Industry figures from Kantar Worldpanel said that Tesco sales rose by 0.3pc year-on-year in the 12 weeks to February 1, the company’s first growth since January 2014.
Morrisons also enjoyed its performance in more than a year, with sales down by just 0.4pc, a better performance than rivals Asda and J Sainsbury.
