C&S Wholesale Grocers Inks New Agreements With ShurSave Group Members

The independent grocery owners who make up the ShurSave group have begun signing long-term deals with a new wholesaler, C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc., which purchased the assets of the bankrupt cooperative Associated Wholesales Inc.

C&S Wholesale purchased the assets of AWI Inc., a cooperative owned by about 500 members, in a court-supervised sale in November.

Joe Fasula, owner of Scranton-based Gerrity’s Grocery Store, has signed a supply agreement with C&S.

The contracts gives the stores a go-to supplier, but also gives the wholesaler dependable demand with the confidence and leverage to negotiate with producers, Mr. Fasula said. That, he said, should result in better pricing and more product choices, particularly for organic foods.
