CONNECT Food + Drink + Lodging Expo To Offer Organic Waste Workshop

Vancouver, BC – The CONNECT Food + Drink + Lodging Expo is pleased to announce that they will be partnering with Sysco, FreshPoint and Trimpac to present an exclusive Organic Waste Workshop. The greening of the hospitality industry is happening. Don’t be left behind!

The Organic Waste Workshop is a very topical subject for foodservice operations of all sizes in the Metro Vancouver.  “Recent policy changes are impacting day to day business and operators are looking for tools that will help them understand the challenges and opportunities that the organics waste ban presents them”, says Michael Audet, Sysco Vancouver’s Marketing & Customer Relations Manager. “Sysco hosted a similar workshop on August 19th and the feedback from operators was fantastic and encouraged us to repeat it at this Fall’s key hospitality industry event.”

In designing this two-hour workshop, organizers have brought together a cross section of operators and policy directors that are uniquely able to address all the aspects of the Organics Waste Ban and how it impacts business. They have created an interactive and informative session designed to provide valuable tools that operators can put in to practice immediately.

The goal of the Organics Ban is to divert organic waste from landfills but for operators, it’s about the bottom line. This session will help identify real ways these changes can also help save money.  The workshop will include an overview of Metro Vancouver’s organics programs, a panel discussion featuring unique service providers, a waste audit and waste plan template created by GreenStep Solutions and a selection of compostable and biodegradable product solutions offered by Sysco.

“We are looking forward to having restaurant owners and chefs get their hands dirty in the interactive waste audit component” says CONNECT Show manager, Samantha Scholefield. “Bringing industry leading seminars is part of the show mandate. We want to ensure that operators leave the event with real tools to help them succeed in business. Including a hands on aspect within this industry leading program is essential to making it practical for operators.”

Attendees will be invited to finish the session with a back of house tour of the Vancouver Convention Centre. VCC is one of Vancouver’s only LEED certified buildings – the highest green standard in the world. “This is an opportunity to see green practices and technologies in a real setting and put some of the knowledge from the session to the test,” says Sysco’s Michael Audet.

About Sysco

Sysco has the talent and reach to go beyond the needs and expectations of our customers.

Building customer relationships requires time, effort and sincerity. For Sysco, it began with a promise to assist foodservice operators in providing consumers with solutions for meals consumed away from home. Since the initial public offering in 1970, when sales were $115 million, Sysco has grown to $46 billion in sales for fiscal year 2014.

Many solid customer relationships have been nurtured along the way, countless dining trends and meal alternatives have evolved, and today the decision to consume meals prepared away from home is as much necessity as choice. Since then, the industry it serves has expanded from $35 billion to approximately $255 billion.

Sysco has 5 locations in BC and our product lines are as diverse as the 750+ employees in BC who support its daily operations. We have thousands of ingredients needed to prepare meals, as well as ancillary preparation, serving and packaging products. As a result, Sysco can make a difference in its customers' lives and the success of their businesses.
