The recently announced merger of Henry's Farmers Market and Sprouts Farmers Market will result in the rebranding of more than 30 Henry's stores in California, including a new store planned for Costa Mesa.
That store – in a competitive supermarket area around Newport Boulevard and 17th Street – will open as a Sprouts later this year, according to Sprouts Chief Executive Shon Boney.
Boney's grandfather, Henry, started the first generation of Henry's stores in San Diego in 1943 – making it a bittersweet decision to wipe out the name. The marquee changes will start in about six months.
"Henry was my grandfather. He is near and dear to our hearts and we are protective of him," Boney, 42, told me during a recent interview to discuss the merger.
