Brookshire Grocery Co. said it’s buying 25 former Wal-Mart Express stores that are located in smaller markets in Texas and Louisiana.
Wal-Mart closed the 12,000-square-foot stores in January. Between November 2014 and February 2015, Wal-Mart opened the Wal-Mart Express stores in Texas as part of a pilot program to go small and put the tiny (by Wal-Mart standards) stores in rural markets 10 to 15 miles between its Supercenters. Wal-Mart has about 600 stores in Texas, including Sam’s Clubs.
Tyler-based Brookshire plans to reopen the locations as Spring Market stores. The Spring brand harkens back to Brookshire’s roots. The company’s first grocery opened in 1928 on Spring Avenue in Tyler. The transaction is expected to close in July.
