This Indianapolis grocer's new CEO, Joseph Kelley, says nutritional guidance should be a staple at every store, and he is devoted to making the supermarket a leader in the nation.
"We see a corporate responsibility, a personal responsibility that we step into this arena and try to provide a solution," he said.
For you the shopper? That translates into lots of tags on products.
First, there are the stars on the price tags, a system called Guiding Stars, which Marsh launched several months ago.
The way it works: food products are awarded credit points for positive nutrient attributes, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and whole grains. Then they are assigned debit points for negative nutrient attributes, such as saturated fat, cholesterol, added sodium and added sugar. The net score is translated into a rating of 0, 1, 2 or 3 stars on the price tag. The higher the number, the more nutritious the food.
