Stanislaus County Cherry Growers Eligible For Disaster Assistance

Cherry growers in Stanislaus and neighboring counties can now apply for low-interest government loans because June's heavy rains ruined much of their crop.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday designated Stanislaus as a disaster area due to crop losses caused by storms and high wind. Most of the damage took place during a bout of unseasonable weather the first week of June.

Farmers from neighboring counties, including San Joaquin — where most of the state's cherries come from — are also eligible for the loans, the USDA said. Growers have eight months to apply.
