LOS ALAMITOS, CA – Frieda's Organic Klamath Pearl Potatoes will be featured in the Schnucks Cooks program, Produce University(r), and a potato sales contest in Schnucks produce departments in November. Frieda's has been marketing the specialty white potato variety since 2005, and it recently underwent a package redesign.
From November 2-29, Schnucks produce managers will be competing for the highest POS sales on Frieda's Klamath Pearl potato variety, without an increase in shrink from the previous year. Frieda's will award cash prizes to the five top-winning produce managers.
"With the new bag and packaging design on our Klamath Pearls, this contest is the perfect opportunity to promote the product and create more sales for Schnucks," said Jackie Caplan Wiggins, Vice President and Business Development Manager.
"The contest also fosters friendly competition among the produce managers, and encourages them to get even more creative with merchandising."
Meanwhile, on November 7, 8 and 9, Schnucks Cooks demonstration counters in 40 stores will feature the Klamath Pearls in a recipe — "Potato Pearls." Shoppers will have a chance to watch Schnucks Cooks chefs prepare the recipe and then taste the results. The recipe also includes shallots and Frieda's Elephant Garlic.
Finally, on Saturday, Nov. 13, all Schnucks and Logli produce departments will be hosting a Produce University(r) on Frieda's Organic Klamath Pearl Potatoes and specialty allium varieties, including Pearl and Boiler Onions, Shallots and Black Garlic. Produce managers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer questions and offer samples to educate shoppers about these specialty gourmet produce items. In addition, informational recipe brochures will be available both at the Schnucks Cooks counter and in the produce department.
"Our Organic Klamath Pearls are really a potato for foodies and we are excited to include them in both the Schnucks Cooks and Produce University(r) programs," said Karen Caplan, Frieda's President and CEO. "These sustainably-farmed potatoes have a fabulous flavor and texture, and there's no need to peel their thin skins."
Each Produce U. session begins with an in-depth produce manager training seminar, prior to the consumer event, to familiarize the produce teams with the featured items, which are selected based on season and popularity. In addition, Schnucks works with Frieda's to create customized in-store signage, product fact sheets, and take-away consumer brochures. Another key element of the program involves local consumer media outreach to help spread the word about the upcoming event.
