San Diego County Farm Bureau Program Puts More Focus On Local Produce

Your pick: an avocado grown in Chile, or one grown in Fallbrook.

Not a tough choice for most consumers, assuming similar prices. Shoppers tend to trust the locally grown produce more and would prefer their dollars support a county farmer instead of some international conglomerate. Many are cognizant of the added environmental costs of shipping food from another hemisphere.

The problem is, who knows when the produce is locally grown? Much of the time, it’s difficult to tell, unless the buyer tracks down and pesters a store manager.

The San Diego County Farm Bureau would like to change that situation soon. A program to make locally grown food products stand out in the marketplace is starting to gain momentum after years of gestating.
