Royal Hawaiian Orchards Petitions The FDA To Allow Health Claims

Royal Hawaiian Orchards, a Hawaii-based macadamia nut snacks business, has prepared and submitted a petition to the Food and Drug Administration as it hopes to boost demand and consumption.

The petition, if approved, would allow all marketers of macadamia nuts to make the following health claim: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that eating 1.5 ounces per day of macadamia nuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and not resulting in increased intake of saturated fat or calories may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. See nutrition information for fat [and calorie] content.”

Hilo-based Royal Hawaiian Orchards (Other OTC: NNUTU) has been working on the petition for the past two years. It began its research with Maria Stewart, a professor and researcher at University of Hawaii, before bringing on several other academics and specialists.
