Rainier Fruit Co. has become the exclusive North American grower and shipper of a variety of apple, Junami, that until recently has been grown only in northwestern Europe.
Junami apples are available now in various U.S. markets, and will be for three to four weeks while supplies last. They build flavor in storage between the fall harvest and release in January.
"We have the flexibility to store them and release them later in the season when many regional, lower-volume varieties have been sold," said Suzanne Wolter, director of marketing for Rainier, based in Selah, Wash.
In the Puget Sound area, Junami apples will be available at Haggen, Town & Country, Top, Metropolitan Market and Safeway grocery stores, according to Wolter.
