YAKIMA, Wash. — A proposed trade remedy that would make it easier for the U.S. to bring cases against its North American trade partners has generated concern from local tree fruit officials.
In recent months, U.S. trade officials have shown interest in the addition of a trade provision for seasonal and perishable products to the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, that could be used to limit agricultural commodities from Canada and Mexico during peak seasons for U.S. crops.
Trade representatives from all three countries are in Ottawa for the third round of ongoing renegotiation of the free-trade agreement, which dates back to 1994. The latest round of renegotiation ends Wednesday.
