Produce Suppliers & Retailers Expand Partnership During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Pink Ribbon Produce, a unique retail program committed to the fight against breast cancer, will return this October to more than 500 Harris Teeter, Meijer and Price Chopper stores. The educational fundraising program, managed by AugustineIdeas, partners the three grocery retailers with produce suppliers to raise money for local Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Affiliates. Stores will direct shoppers to the participating produce suppliers with a Pink Ribbon Produce icon on posters and point-of-sale signs at the product.

“Pink Ribbon Produce brings together grocery retailers, produce partners and consumers to support a cause that directly impacts thousands within our communities,” said Debbie Augustine, Chief Executive Officer of AugustineIdeas. “Breast cancer has touched many of our friends and families. This program helps fund research for a cure, educates women on the importance of early detection and provides grants for those without insurance who need to get screened.”

In clinics across the country like the Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) in Virginia, Komen for the Cure helps women get the necessary screenings, tests and treatments for breast cancer. Damba Oyuntsetsey, a Mongolian immigrant currently living in the Washington, D.C. area, learned that she had breast cancer in 2008. After getting treatment and support through AFC and Komen, she is now healthy after having a double mastectomy. She is now an advocate for breast cancer awareness and supports the “Tell Three Women” program. The effort encourages women to tell three women they know about the importance of getting a mammogram.

Through various fundraising activities, including Pink Ribbon Produce and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series, Komen has invested more than $1.9 billion in research and lifesaving community programs.
