CASTROVILLE, Calif. – Last month Ocean Mist Farms welcomed its Frost Kissed® artichokes, the “limited-edition” flavorful variety available when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. This month, the largest grower shipper of fresh artichokes explains in more detail the weather conditions that have impacted artichoke production, causing a delay in the start of Spring Artichoke Season.
“In mid- February, both of our growing regions in Coachella and Castroville, California experienced heavy frost followed by rain. These two successive weather events have caused not only the frosted appearance but also has reduced supply,” explains Dale Huss, VP of Artichoke Production at Ocean Mist Farms.
Limited quality production means fewer chokes on the store shelves, however, the dedicated artichoke shopper will find a few for the Easter table. “Unfortunately, this year, artichoke availability is severely limited at a time when there are usually good quantities,” commented Diana McClean, Senior Director of Marketing at Ocean Mist Farms. “Typically, we launch an annual artichoke consumer promotion late March or early April and align our messaging to inspire consumption around the Easter holiday. This year, however, we are postponing the launch until artichoke conditions recover.”
Ocean Mist Farms expects quality artichokes to be available in the next two to three weeks baring any further frost conditions. “Once the weather situation smooths out, we anticipate solid supplies for the rest of the year.” says Huss.
