“Organic Fingerlimes are a hit”, said Richard Leibowitz, president of Culinary Specialty Produce in Mountainside, New Jersey. “Since we rolled out this new packaging we have had steady reorders and numerous inquiries. We are distributing to both national and regional chains with steady growth.
Mr. Leibowitz is referring to the new clamshell packaging that is packed by count making the product very accessible and affordable. Also known as Caviar Limes or Citrus Caviar, these tasty little pearls are becoming popular with consumers across the country.
Culinary, along with their packaging and distribution partner, Goodness Gardens, has developed a very user friendly new label that promises more attention. Brian Murphy, president of Goodness Gardens says “when you have such a great product inside the package, all you can do is improve the package itself.”
And improve it they have. Originally packed in the “Single Serve” label that Goodness has had great success with, the new label reflects the product more accurately. Under the “Culinary Harvest®” label, this new package retains its single serve value and much more. There is a conventional high graphic label in development as well.
The new package displays both exterior and interior of the fruit and gives some brief serving suggestions. It has the easily recognizable USDA organic emblem, COO, lot number and website information. This sleek attractive package also has a QR code that when scanned takes you directly to a site with numerous recipes and uses for Fingerlimes.
“We know that Fingerlimes are so unique they will require education to buyers, merchandisers and consumers”, notes Leibowitz. “We have developed an informative brochure with highlights, history, and recipe ideas that can be customized for retail handouts. We are developing a merchandising guide to demonstrate how Fingerlimes can be used with perishables throughout the store, and now we have a web site with more detail and recipes for savory sweet or liquid applications.” Mr. Leibowitz also explained that he hopes to have contests and tastings in the summer when the Fingerlimes are at peak of production.
Mr. Murphy is sold on the idea of the “Single Serve” package and is looking to expand the program with many other citrus items in the near future. “It is a great way to introduce new items without forcing the retailer to carry expensive inventory and a price point low enough to attract new customers.”
