When Enza Zaden began innovating its pipeline of compelling new cantaloupe varieties almost a decade ago, forward-thinking in flavor and harvest efficiencies were top of mind.
By working closely with southwestern growers, the company introduced Karameza in 2014, followed by Kazta and Silarius earlier this year. With each variety offering superior flavor, Enza Zaden is establishing itself as a leader in the attribute that’s most important to consumers.
“We entered the melon market with intention to learn, and to lead, by partnering with southwestern growers to produce varieties that are high yielding and labor-friendly; and by being in touch with consumer preferences for appearance, texture, and ultimately, for taste,” said Jean Thomin, Marketing Manager, Enza Zaden USA.
Thomin further explains that the company’s flavor achievements have been quite deliberate, the result of years of breeding the most flavorful parental lines to establish genetics that could meet and exceed consumer tastes. With many melon options to choose from, US consumers have become much more discerning, seeking robust flavor development, beyond sweetness.
“With the trio of currently available varieties, and the many exciting varieties developing in the pipeline, we are demonstrating Enza Zaden’s commitment to enhanced flavor development and an overall taste experience that’s truly enjoyable and reflective of the today’s consumer palate,” said Dominique Chambeyron, Senior Melon Breeder, Enza Zaden.
A close relationship with southwestern growers will continue as Enza Zaden both expands the pipeline and introduces several new varieties within the next year. “Just as with more than 20 other vegetables and culinary herbs, our goal in the melon market is to help create competitive advantage for growers through healthy, high-yielding, attractive, long-lasting and ultimately flavorful varieties,” said Thomin.
Karameza, Kazta and Silarius seeds are available in the Southwest through TS&L Seed Company.
